The Wackness = The Dopeness

While everyone raves about The Dark Knight we find ourselves wondering whether we are the only ones that weren't necessarily the biggest fans of the movie? Perhaps we need to just pony up the extra coin and go see it in IMAX. . .

However, a film that we both have been raving about since seeing it Wednesday evening is The Wackness. We feel that it is easily the best movie we've seen in the last three months. We're not saying that The Wackness is better than The Dark Knight per se, we're just saying we enjoyed it much more. We loved how the movie captured the time period so accurately (summer 1994) with the following references: OJ Simpson on the front page of the NY Post, a Forest Gump ad on a bus, conversations about Gulianni arresting the homeless, blowing on a Nintendo game to clean it out which turned out to be Zelda, the Twin Towers still in New York's skyline, and of course rocking the Adidas, walking down the street with a ghetto blaster, and drinking 40's straight out of the brown bag (Jose's getting thirsty for a King Cobra just thinking about it).

It was crazy seeing the kid from Drake & Josh, Josh Peck, do a complete 180 from his Nickelodeon character, breaking out with such a strong performance. And, as far as Ben Kingsley's performance, it can be added to his repertoire of great characters that he has played on the silver screen (ie - Don Logan of Sexy Beast, Bruce Pandolfini of Searching For Bobby Fischer, Itzhak Stern of Schindler's List, and of course Ghandi).

While on the topic of cinema, we are going to head to the movies this afternoon and check out the latest Woody Allen film, Vicky Christina Barcelona. Afterwards, we are looking forward to having some good eats down at the Feast of the Assumption in Little Italy.

Choice jams from our youth on The Wackness Soundtrack:

[Mp3] A Tribe Called Quest - Can I Kick It? This song had Jose's head nodding like he used to back in the day with his headphones on.

[Mp3] Notorious BIG - The What It was funny in the movie for Josh Peck and Method Man's characters to talk about Biggie as underground and as the next big thing, b/c for so long he's been known as the greatest. RIP.

[Mp3] Biz Markie - Just a Friend It's a classic. 'Nuff said.

Bonus:

[Mp3] DJ D-Nice - The Wackness Mixtape It's the dopeness

AHHHHHH-Mix Tapes! The most frustrating fun you could have when you were 15.

Glad you liked the flick. It's one of the best I've seen this summer.
